The
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoned the eight principal offices in both
chambers of the National Assembly to various geo-political zones in the
country.
It,
however, refused to name the individuals for the positions, placing the onus on
the zonal caucuses of the party in the federal legislature.
The
opposition party was, however, quick to endorse the choice of Leo Ogor as
Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, stressing that this was done
in respect for the extant rules of the lower chamber.
Olisa
Metuh, PDP national publicity secretary, said this at a press conference on
Wednesday, on the outcome of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC)
meeting in Abuja.
According
to Metuh, the party also zoned the seat of Minority Leader in the Sen- ate to the
South South; Minority Whip, North Central; Deputy Minority Leader, North East,
and Deputy Minority Whip, South West. Also in the House of Rep- resentatives,
the positions of Minority Whip, Deputy Minority Whip and Deputy Minority Leader
were zoned to North West, North East and South East, respectively.
While
asking the cau- cuses to conclude the ex- ercise within one week, the party
further clarified that the nomination process should “take into consider- ation
ranking, gender and religious sensitivities.”
In
another development, the PDP has rejected the announcement of Amina Zakari as
acting chairman of the Independent Nation- al Electoral Commission (INEC).
Also
rejected was Ibrahim Idris as Accountant General of the Federation (AGF).
This
comes less than 24 hours after Zakari’s appoint- ment by President Muham- madu
Buhari. To the PDP, the two appointments did not follow due process
