Damaturu nursing students protests sales of handouts

DAMATURU—Aggrieved students of Shehu Sule School of Nursing in Damaturu, Yobe State, Thursday storm the streets, protesting the sale of handouts by teachers, who insist students must buy them before passing examinations.

The aggrieved students also blocked major highways, aside from disrupting academic activities in the institution.
The students, in their hundreds, also accused the Principal of the school, Mallam Musa Amshi, of conniving with teachers of the institution to deprive them of their rights to pass exams unless they bought handouts and pamphlets produced by the teachers.
It was gathered that only 30 of the 95 final year students of the institution passed the end of term examinations because they bought the handouts, while over 30 were withdrawn as 30 others were asked to repeat due to their inability to buy handouts, which price ranges from N500 to N1,000.
It took the intervention of a team of anti-riot policemen, who used tear-gas, to control the protesting students.
It was also learned that the principal of the school and some teachers narrowly escaped being attacked by the rampaging students.
At press time, calm had returned to the school, with heavily armed security personnel present at the scene.
