SENATE
Minority leader and former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill
Akpabio who was Monday involved in a car accident on his way to the Nnamdi
Azikiwe International Airport is recuperating at National Hospital.
Speaking
with Journalists, on Tuesday, Chief Information Officer of National Hospital,
Rabiah Labaran said, “he was brought in this morning after he had a car crash
as I learnt. He was brought in from the Bolingo Hotel junction where a vehicle
crashed into his own vehicle from behind but lucky enough when they brought him
after the preliminary check –up, it was found out that he did not have any
serious injury.
“He was
talking when he was brought in and they gave him necessary attention at the
trauma unit. I learnt that as at this afternoon, he was taken to the private
wing of the hospital for proper care, though it has not been disclosed what
kind of injury he has. It is something he can come over in a few days. He is
currently recuperating.”
Also one of
the senator’s aide sighted at the National Hospital, said that Akpabio was
traveling outside the country to visit his wife and children when the
unfortunate incident happened.
Vanguard
gathered that the accident which took place on the early hours of yesterday at
Bolingo Hotel in the Central Business District of the Federal Capital City,
FCC, the nation’s capital, Abuja on his way to catch up with an international
flight.
Soon after
the accident, Senator Akpabio was immediately rushed to the National Hospital
for an intensive care.
At the scene
of the accident, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC officer who craved anonymity,
disclosed it took place at around 7:25am near the Bolingo Hotel, just as he
said that the occupants of the vehicles in the convoy of the ambassador and
Akpabio’s driver did not sustain any injury, but that the senator suffered some
injuries in the chest region.
The Junction
where the accident occurred are roads from Area 10, near the Ship which houses
the Ministry of Defence, the road from the Federal Secretariat and the road to
the airport.
Vanguard
also gathered that his car ran into a convoy of a foreign envoy whose identity
had not been identified as at the time of filing this report.
Governor
Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom was one of the early callers at the National Trauma
Center of the National Hospital.
The Deputy
Minority Whip, Senator Biodun Olujimi, who was also one of the early callers at
the hospital, explained that medical personnel at the hospital were taking care
of the Senate Minority Whip.
