Running the world's biggest social network isn't easy and
Facebook has apologised for last night's global outage. The network left thousands of users around the world unable to sign
in at just after 8pm last night.
It was down for about 40 minutes. It's the third time
in less than a month that service has been lost.
"We apologize to those who have been
inconvenienced," said a Facebook spokesperson.
The issues that caused the downtime came from a
"configuration issue" thought to have occurred following recent
updates to Facebook's service.
The site claims to have 1.23bn monthly users and last night
all they were able to see was an error message.
"We encrypt communications, we use secure protocols for
traffic, we encourage people to use multiple factors for authentication and we
go out of our way to help fix issues we find in other people's services.
"The internet works because most people and companies
do the same. We work together to create this secure environment and make our shared
space even better for the world."
In a post celebrating the site's 10th anniversary, he told
users: "I'm so grateful to be able to help build these tools for you. I
feel a deep responsibility to make the most of my time here and serve you the
best I can."
