Apple is preparing to unleash its new iOS9 operating system,
which will be available for download tomorrow. Although critics are already saying the update is suffering
from a "lack of newness", Apple fans have gone into excitement
overdrive on social media.
The release will come with a motherlode of new emojis,
including the controversial middle finger icon and the equally infamous taco
(which has some distinctly non-culinary connotations).
Although the new iOS is not the biggest update you could
imagine, there are several key improvements which could prove handy.
Here are five reasons to be excited about the new version of
Apple's mobile operating system.
1. Better
battery life
Everyone worries about losing battery power on their
phone and Apple has addressed it with a new Low Power mode.
It's designed to squeeze an extra hour of use from your
phone by shutting down various non-essential processes.
2. Improved
News and Maps apps
Apple is launching a news app that will replace Newsstand
and act in a similar way to other news feeds like Flipboard and Feedly.
It will pull together all of the stories you want to read
into a magazine-style aggregator.
Meanwhile, Apple Maps has also been enhanced with
public transport routes. So you can finally check the bus and tube timetables
on the move like you can with Google Maps.
3. Better
support for Apple Pay
Apple Pay arrived in the UK this year and Apple is
expected to spend some of its keynote discussing the new system.
The company is renaming Passbook to Apple Wallet and has
enhanced the app to manage even more credit cards and store membership options.
4. Multitasking
for iPad
There are new multitasking features for iPad meaning you can
snap two apps together side by side rather than having to switch between the
two - so that means you can watch a video while browsing the web or composing
an email.
It's a simple but much-requested feature.
5. Security
is even tighter
Users will have to enter a 6-digit passcode to get into their
devices instead of a 4-digit one.
The company has also added a new keyboard that it reckons
will make you an even faster typer on your iPhone or iPad.
