Chris
Harper- Mercer, 26, took the innocent lives of 9 people whenhe opened fire on the grounds of Umpqua Community College inRoseburg, Oregon, on the afternoon of Oct. 1. Just over 24 hours later, the
names of the first three deceased victims have been released.
The 9 people who lost their lives in this horrific
incident are slowly but surely being identified. The first three
identities, Lucero Alvarez, 19, Rebecka Carnes, 18, and Jason
Johnson, 33, were students who were tragically killed by the shooter during his
rampage on the UCC campus, confirms BuzzFeed.
As soon as the shooting occurred, initially 15 people were
pronounced dead. That number lowered to 10 as police handled the terrifying situation,
eventually confirming that the shooter was also included in that total.
Even more were wounded as a result of the massacre.
The Douglas Country Sherriff’s Office said in a
statement that the first indication of the shooting came at 10:40 a.m. PST on
Oct. 1, according to the Washington Post. Students and faculty were
immediately evacuated from the campus, but sadly damage had already been
done. To add to the heartbreak, Umpqua Community College had just resumed
fall classes the week prior to the shooting.
Despite the tragic number of lives lost, police were able to
locate the shooter, later identifying him as Chris Harper-Mercer. After a
shootout with heroic police officers, he was confirmed to be deceased during
the first press conference with Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin.
I am keeping the families of the shooting victims in our
thoughts during this difficult time.
